Mugshot Monday: Kava.Bar

Culprit: Kava.Bar

Location: Skalná 1944/1, 811 01 Bratislava

Verdict: Just like Grandma’s house

Description: Thin tea cups spotted with vibrant butterflies, wobbly tables covered in newsprint, and a collection of oil paintings of renaissance men with pipes clenched in their mouths: the pleasantly surprising characteristics that make Kava.Bar one of the most popular cafes in Bratislava.

I visited this cafe for the first time a few weeks ago when the unseasonably warm weather suddenly turned cold and biting. After wandering through the outskirts of Old Town in a shiver, my friend and I were in desperate need of shelter and scalding drinks. Kava.Bar, the beacon of hope that is was, pulled us in.

This cafe is very tiny and if you have the misfortune of sitting close to the door, it’s not quite warm enough to take all of your outdoor layers off. However, on warmer days, it’s the perfect place to window watch rattling trams and fast walking Slovaks travel on the main road connecting every quirky corner of Old Town.

The coffee itself is perfectly tasty and served in lovely china cups reminiscent of your grandmother’s house. The newsprint tables and haphazard gallery of paintings certainly add to the atmosphere while the daily cake menu and sweet baristas make the slightly chilly atmosphere cosy.

If you’re in need of a coffee break during your wanderings around town, be sure to check this place out, open everyday from 7:30am to 8pm. Just make sure you’re wearing an extra warm sweater.

Great blog. Your posts always make me want to be there and visit all those places!!! And don’t believe your mother when she says I was upset about a misspelling – she always exaggerates 🙂

Oooh this was actually one of the first places I ever went to in Bratislava, and then I actually never went back! Even though I loved its aesthetic. (Or maybe just the once? I can’t remember. There were too many Sundays :)) Glad you like it!!
